It was about 10:30 in the morning when the redoubtable Irish Brigade moved briskly onto the bridge over the Rappahannock in Fredericksburg in preparation for the bloody assault on the Confederate lines dug in along the heights. A brass band struck up the little known tune “Garryowen” and the men of Erin stepped to its jaunty strains as they crossed the icy river. Sensing victory, the Irishmen swung through town to the battle line, only to find “hell personified.” Nearly 550 of them would be killed, wounded or missing before the days fighting ended.
Garryowen, Don Troiani’s latest masterful limited edition print, captures both the look and the spirit of that moment in history when the Irish Brigade went forward at Fredericksburg. Image size is 17" x 34", overall size: 22" x37".
